For freelancers, a group that already deals with fluctuating incomes, late or denied payment makes freelancing even more financially challenging. Traditional employees can file wage claims with the Department of Labor when their employers don't pay. Freelancers, however, are left to face deadbeat companies alone. The cost and difficulty of going after the money they're owed forces many freelancers to simply walk away, hurting their bottom line and the greater economy.
