The following process applies to group insurance plans only.
Learn more about individual market plans through UnitedHealthcare's Golden Rule Insurance Company and other affiliates.
ELIGIBILITY
Group Insurance Plans
To be eligible for one of our group plans, members must meet the Freelancers Union eligibility requirements and complete an eligibility application -- see How to Apply.
Group plans include:
- Empire BlueCross BlueShield health insurance (in New York State only)
- PerfectHealth insurance (in New York State only)
- Life insurance
- Dental insurance
- Disability insurance
Individual Market Insurance Plans
If you are applying for a Golden Rule health insurance plan, Freelancers Union doesn't determine eligibility, but depending on the rules in your state, rates and coverage might vary based on your medical history. For more information, visit the Golden Rule website.
NOTE: If you are applying for a Golden Rule health insurance plan AND one of our group insurance plans, you will need to complete a Freelancers Union eligibility application for the group insurance plan.
FREELANCERS UNION ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
To qualify for insurance benefits you must satisfy each of the following requirements:
1. You must be an independent worker.
2. You must meet the residency requirements below*. You will be required to enter the type of insurance plan(s) you are applying for at the time of application.

*Coverage areas vary by health insurance plan and may not include all areas of New York state.
† Residents of Connecticut who work in New York State may be eligible to enroll in Freelancers Union group health insurance plans.
3. You must work in one or more of the following eligible industries and occupations:
- Arts, Design & Entertainment
- Domestic Child Care giver
- Financial Services
- Media & Advertising
- Nonprofit
- Skilled Computer User
- Technology
- Traditional or Alternative health care provider
4. You must demonstrate that you have done one of the following while working in the eligible
industries or occupations above:
- Worked at least 20 paid hours in each of the last 8 weeks
OR
- Earned at least $10,000 for work done within the last 6 months
